Does My Computer Support Bluetooth?

Bluetooth is the most significant addition to our lives after cell phones. It is the most iconic invention that has made our lives much easier, right?

Bluetooth is a short-range wireless communication technology which enables devices such as mobile phones, computers, and peripherals to transmit data or voice wirelessly over a short distance. The purpose of Bluetooth is to replace the cables that normally connect devices, while still keeping the communications secure and sound. Developed in 1994, the sole purpose of Bluetooth was to replace cables from our devices but over time has it has ended up benefitting us in a lot more ways. Bluetooth consumes low power and low costs which makes it less prone to causing interferences with other wireless devices.

If you cannot remember if your computer is equipped with an internal Bluetooth adapter, there are several ways you can find out. Let me help you with the simplest way of finding it out:

If you use a Windows computer-

  • Use the “Device Manager”

Computers require certain hardware to support Bluetooth. To find out of your computer has Bluetooth connectivity, go to the Device Manager that has all the hardware of the computer listed. To access the device manager follow the below step:

  1. Go to the Start Menu
  2. Look for Device Manager using the search box
  3. Open the Device Manager by choosing it from the search results
  • Look for the Bluetooth category

Device manager is used to assess the devices attached to the computer such as Disk drives, Processors, Display Adapters, etc. If your computer supports a Bluetooth then the Device Manager will have a category that says “Bluetooth”. The categories of the device manager are alphabetically arranged which makes it easy for you to find the category you want.

  • Search in the “Network Adapters” category
If you don’t find the Bluetooth category, you may find your Bluetooth adapter in the “Network adapters” category which normally contains the network card. Look for the word “Bluetooth”.
  • Use your Bluetooth device

Once you find that Bluetooth is present, you can start using your Bluetooth devices.

Another quicker way to know if your system has a Bluetooth is to see if there is a Bluetooth symbol in your System Tray. If yes, then you have Bluetooth hardware installed and active. But if you do not have Bluetooth hardware installed, you can purchase Bluetooth USB dongle as the installation of Bluetooth is very simple and user friendly.

If you use a Mac-

Most Macs have Bluetooth capability of one kind or another. If you want to make sure, do this:

  • Open the Apple menu and select “About This Mac”

About this Mac shows you an overview of your computer’s basic information

  • Select “System Info”

The System Info generates a report on all hardware connected to your computer.

  • Look for “Bluetooth”

Search the option of Bluetooth there and select it to find out about your Bluetooth connection.

  • Use your Bluetooth device

Once you find that Bluetooth is present, you can start using your Bluetooth devices.

In case your Mac does not have a Bluetooth hardware installed, which is very low possibility because almost all Macs support Bluetooth, you can add it by purchasing a Bluetooth USB dongle.

Bluetooth wireless technology is extremely important in today’s time because it makes our lives so much easier. It does not require you to be in close proximity of the computer to be able to use it.
